Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

"Watch out if you to go McCarthy!" warned an athletically-built woman yanking her duffel bag out of the cargo compartment of a tiny plane. "You will not come back the same."

The opportunity to hike on a glacier! We had wanted to do it at Mt. Rainier last year, but had been told that it wasn't safe. You have to go further north. But now we were in Alaska, where the glaciers are beautiful and hikable. We had a fantastic guide for an amazing half-day Root Glacier Tour in Kennicott in the middle of the park. Kennicott is a little bit difficult to get to, though. There is a road, but it's dirt. There is a shuttle, but it takes hours in each direction. Our travel agent recommended a flightseeing tour instead. That was right up our alley. A scenic flight and a glacier hike! Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve might be the most exciting national park visit we've ever had!

The athletically-built woman had spent several days out in the park. We only had one day to spend there, but we definitely had an amazing experience. We may very well not have come back the same.

On to Denali National Park.
