Canyonlands National Park

Sunrise over the canyon from Dead Horse Point.

My friend Ellen had advised that the campsites at Dead Horse Point State Park, just outside Canyonlands National Park, were better than the ones in the national park. She was right--we were able to buy ice at the camp entrance, and we had this nice shelter. The tent pad area was impeccably raked, like a particularly uniform Zen garden.

The site after we set it up, with our lovely blockhouse bathroom.

The blockhouse unfortunately blew over on its side while we were hiking in Canyonlands on Tuesday. Eric hastily reassembled it, but one of the poles had been bent.

When we returned to camp after photographing the sunrise from Dead Horse Point, we found our blockhouse sadly listing to the side.

Eric managed to rebend the pole and get it stand mostly upright again, and we staked it, but it was no longer strong enough to hold a shower bag. We would have only sponge baths until we stayed in a motel Wednesday night.

Our hot dog buns, brought from Berkeley, mysteriously disappeared somewhere en route, but Eric found a way to make a tasty hot dinner in camp Tuesday, anyway. (These are turkey dogs.)
